A hip spot right in the heart of Westwood, the Emporium Thai. a street front restaurant, has a chic designed dining room that is easy on the eye, with comfortable booths and tables, and the most pleasant soft background music.
This sets the delightful scene for their new seasonal collection of the finest flavor packed Southern Thai culinary treats to fire up your taste buds. Featuring signature delights, all with your choice of spicy or mild( on a scale of 0 to 10), many dishes that are designed for sharing Tapas style, and plenty of vegetarian, gluten free and peanut free options.
Owner John Sungkamee was happy to share his story of how his mother Supis (his total inspiration), won a lottery in Thailand to come to the United States, and brought John with her, the youngest of her 12 children. With the opening of Thai Emporium, many of the family began emigrating here, and now work alongside him, including his sister Gina who is the Executive Chef.
Family member Honey Bee (I love that name) walked us through the menu. We followed her suggestions that are featured in the new Thai Tapas Tasting Menu consisting of 4 courses, with an optional wine pairing available.
First Course: Southern Wings with 2016 Margerum Riviera Rose (Santa Barbara County. The hot chicken wings are cooked in Thai spices with Southern Thai curry flavors that beautifully meld together. Second Course: Papaya salad with 2016 Clos Henri Petitie Clos Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough NZ). It's an exotic papaya salad featuring duo dishes of Pad Kra Pow Gai Sab, Thai basil ground chicken and Panang curry served with crispy pork belly and Jasmine rice with 2015 Quipe Modern Red (Santa Barbara County). This dish is one of the most popular Thai street foods and it is delicious. The special thick and extremely flavorful Panang curry is prepared with crispy pork belly and Jasmine rice. Dessert: Mango sticky rice comes with slices of mango along the side making the rice sweet and sticky. Yummy!
A staple in the neighborhood of the renowned UCLA since 2000, Emporium Thai's mission is to "create a memorable and wonderful Thai dining experience that you'll return to often and rave about to your friends." In addition to capturing many accolades and prestigious awards, it has also achieved the significant milestone of being the first Thai restaurant to partner with UberEats.
Emporium Thai is open for lunch and dinner, Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Friday-11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Award winning Austerity wines were introduced at an elegant wine and food dinner
Sitting across from Steven DeCosta, the young, knowledgeable and incredibly enthusiastic winemaker of Austerity wines, was contagious. He explained that the premium Austerity wines are wines of the highest discipline, and come from the best and up coming appellations and finest vineyards from San Francisco to Los Angeles along California's Central Coast, including Paso Robles, Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco. www.austeritywines.com
He was indeed a highlight of this very special evening where Steven and the feedfeed community with food by James Beard award-winning Chef Suzanne Goin took place at the uber-chic 5-star Lucques at 8474 Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood www.lucques.com
Our first course was Leeks Vinigette with Prosciutto, Dandelion, Mustard Breadcrumbs and soft cooked egg, accompanied by a 2015 Austerity Chardonnay. This was followed by a mouthwatering Braised Beef Short Ribs with sauteed greens cipollini onions and horseradish cream and paired with an exceptional 2015 Austerity Pinot Noir. Topping it all off was a Chocolate Cremeux Tart with Cardamom Cream (no need say anymore) paired with the bold flavor of the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Austerity wines poured had received bronze awards in an international competition and we applaud their achievements. We also extend kudos to both Chef Suzanne for her sumptuous culinary feast, and Lucques for both their outstanding restaurant and incredibly delightful and attentive staff.

I knew this was going to be a delicious and delightful double header for me just from the aromas wafting through the parking lot. I also had the feeling that the passage of time would come to a halt.
Even before I met Lloyd Weinstein, the energetic and enthusiastic "mensch" and owner of Benjies New York Deli Restaurant and Avenue K Bar, childhood memories from the East came flooding back. Most of all I was thrilled to find that I wasn't in the least bit wrong. After reminiscing about the old days, Lloyd and I discovered that in Brooklyn our homes were a block apart, and that we also lived with 3 generations of our families. Yiddish was spoken widely, there was lots of delicious cooking and baking, lots of revelry and most of all lots of love.
Celebrating the "nachas" (joy) of 50 years, family owned restaurant and bar, Benjies & Avenue K, has proven that if you give the customers' good food and service, they will keep coming back.
Lloyd and his lovely wife and partner Noriko Weinstein are proudly celebrating this anniversary in honor of their parents, Stan and Ellie Weinstein, who found Benjies in 1967.
Their menu includes mouthwatering starters like nova lox or whitefish, stuffed cabbage roll, lox and cream cheese on a bagel, creamed or pickled herring with sliced onion, potato latkes served with applesauce and sour cream, chopped liver with sweet red onions, kishka (stuffed derma) veggie sausage sliced and grilled with brown gravy on the side, meat or potato filled knish baked into a golden brown pastry.
Benjie Specialties include The Benjie Special, hot pastrami with cole slaw and Russian dressing; Francheesy, grilled knockwurst with crisp bacon and American cheese; Coney Hot Dog Vienna Coney Island Hot Dog on a grilled egg bun with sauerkraut and diced onions on the side; Deli Feast with all deli favorites, corned beef, pastrami, turkey, tongue, salami and chopped liver; and the House Specialty is sauced brisket of beef. All are offered with delicious sides of potato salad, cole slaw macaroni salad and a variety of pickles.
You must leave room for dessert with mouthwatering choices of apple or cherry strudel, New York cheesecake, a wedge of Halvah with nuts (incredibly sentimental), and the favorite-bread pudding with bourbon sauce and whipped cream.
Located at 1828 N. Tustin Avenue, Santa Ana 92705, phone (714)541-6263 or www.benjiesdeli.com
Open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on weekends.
Happy Hour from 3-7 p.m. with ice cold craft beer on tap and house specialty cocktails.
Take out food and catering are available.
Very well worth the trip wherever you are coming from.

Philippe the original home of the French Dip Sandwich
It's hard to be ordinary, when in fact you're extraordinary... and here's where Philippe steps "up to the plate!"
The oldest and best known restaurant in Southern California has been family owned and operated since 1908... and that's incredibly hard to beat.
Located in the heart of downtown at the crossroads of North Main, Alameda and Ord streets- a block from Union Station and walking distance to City Hall, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, and Olvera Street.
Diners come to Philippe's for the nostalgia as much as for its famous French Dip Sandwiches. Its recipe and preparation has been passed on through four generations and today it is being overseen by dynamic great-great-great grandson Andrew Binder, who is at the helm as manager/partner.
Other famous menu Dip items include, lamb, turkey, pork, ham and pastrami. Tasty sides include potato and macaroni salad, coleslaw and kosher dill pickles.
Philippe is located at 1001 N. Alameda in L.A. Phone (213)628-3781 or www.philippes.com
Open seven days a week from 6 a.m. (open for breakfast) to 10 p.m. except Thanksgiving and Christmas.. Phiippe sells about 2200 sandwiches on weekdays and 3800 on weekends, and 80 gallons of their famous hot mustard a week.

Loveblock and Wolf
What a delight to be the lunch guest of the vivacious and knowledgeable Erica Crawford, founder and CEO of Loveblock Vintners in New Zealand. created along with her husband and winemaker Kim, (both renowned veterans of the amazing New Zealand wine industry.) Along with an astonishing resume of accomplishments, they established Loveblock sustainable wines back in 2004, planting new vineyards in an untamed pasture where sheep used to graze. It brought back wonderful memories for me as I had the opportunity visit Marlborough Atwatere Valley on a recent visit to New Zealand, known for its pristine vineyards surrounded by jagged mountain peaks, brilliant blue skies, crystal clear inlets, and a long, cooling growing season.
The pairing of this wonderful experience took place at Wolf, replete with a contemporary vibe set at the eclectic crossroads of Melrose in Hollywood, an absolutely perfect venue to present a culinary adventure inspired by the energy of Owner and Executive Chef Marcel Vigneron, along with manager Sean Perman, who joined forces and created the incredible menu to enhance Loveblock and complete the delicious and delightful experience.
Chef Marcel has dedicated his life to gastronomy and honing his skills as a chef. He is an artisan who has an affinity for culinary knowledge, who uses a knife as a extension of his hand, and the kitchen as a workshop, the earth as a grocery store. He works with small, local family farms committed to sustainable agriculture, responsible production and promotion of fruits and vegetables.
We enjoyed Hamahi Crudo, nuoc cham, radish, herbs and puffed rice, along with a smooth Sauvignon Blanc; Mushroom Risotto with pine nut, sorrel, peas, pancetta accompanied by Pinto Gris;An amazing Braised Beef Cheek with jerusalem artichoke, endive, turmeric peppercorn sauce, present alongside an incredible Pinot Noir. Blueberry Souffle with quince sorbet was the "icing on the cake!"
Wolf, adjacent to a restaurant named Beefsteak is located at 7661 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles 90446. They are open for dinner only, phone (323)424-7735 for hours and more information.
